Joliet Area Historical Museum and Route 66 Welcome Center

Get ready to Kick with the Rock’in Excitement of Joliet’s Route 66 Experience. Literally touch, feel and interact with exciting elements that will take you back in time to when the entire family loaded in the car for an exciting cross country adventure!

Take a seat at the Route 66 Drive in, get acquainted with Jake and Elwood Blues, and rest up at a Hotel Room complete with Magic Fingers! You will be able to tell all your friends you “Visited Joliet….. and Stayed for Ten to Twenty” with e-mail photo postcards and interactive guest book!


Current exhibits include:


Road on the Ceiling

See the entire Mother Road running along the top of the walls. Recognize such pop icons as the Blue Whale, Burma Shave Signs, Gemini Giant and more!

You won’t have to look far to see a real 57 Chevy driving the road, closely tailed by a motorcycle that travel the course of Chicago to LA several times a day!


The Blues Brothers Photo Op

3-D in person it’s Jake and Elwood Blues! The Blues Brothers, from Joliet are here to stay as a permenant exhibit for visitors to see, touch and take photos with too!

Sitting within the ‘Blues Mobile’ Jake and Elwood are “…. on a mission from God.”


Drive-in Diner

Sit in Car Couches and view short broadcasts and music from the eras that made Route 66 famous! Inside the car will be a radio with seven decade designated buttons and when a button is pressed you hear a short news broadcast and a popular song from that era. Parked within a vintage 50’s style drive in setting, be aware the car hop will ask you to order soon!

Take your time cruising the Menu for the Drive-In, which includes Route 66 Route Beer, black cows, burgers, dogs and malts of all sizes! Photographs of the food are featured on the menu as well as descriptions and prices too. Scratch and sniff the menu cards too, but don’t ruin your appetite as these are available for purchase in the gift shop!


Route 66 Drive-in Theater

Grab your honey or pile in the family, because Joliet’s Drive-In is where you get your Kicks!

Nostalgic Murals set the stage for cars all in a row. Take your seats because the projector is fired up and car speakers are rearing to run by the push of a button!

You can select to view images of the mother road for a virtual tour and a preview of coming attractions.


Route 66 Motel Room

Take a Break, it’s been a long trip!

Settle into your hotel room, with old style television and bed complete with working magic fingers! Use the bedside phone to order up short exerpts of the Rt. 66 Television Show guest starring such famous actors as Robert Duval, Robert Redford, Ron Howard, Joan Crawford, and Suzanne Pleschette!

The Rt. 66 TV show was part of the legend, and lore of the road and now you have the opportunity to watch it again!

A computer touch screen and write-in guest book let you sign in and comment on all the fun you’ve experienced in Joliet!

See a map of the world and register your home town. Future visitors will be able to look up who has visited from their home town too!


E-mail a Postcard

Walk in the photo booth and preserve your experience in Joliet!

Print out a strip of four black and white photos and to create a digital photo with such back drops as a Joliet prison cell, cruising on the mother road in Buzz and Todd’s Corvette or kickin it on stage at the Rialto Theatre! Photos can be emailed directly on site for no charge or printed at the gift shop for a small fee.
